Fulfilling the Great Commission by raising Christ-centred disciples to plant vibrant, biblical churches in our cities and countries all over the world

WINNING THE BATTLE OF THE MIND By Ps Helen Kirby

It has been said that the battle of the mind is something very real and is something we all experience almost everyday. In order to win the battle of the mind, it is important to understand that there is a spiritual dimension in the world that we live in today.

The Bible says:Eph 6:12 (NLT) For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (NLT) The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world (IMPLYING THERE IS ANOTHER WORLD OUT THERE). On the contrary, they have divine (SUPERNATURAL) power to demolish strongholds.

Eph 6:10 (NLT) A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.
On a personal note, I know about the spiritual dimension because I have read and heard true accounts of experiences that people have had with the spiritual realm. Also over the last 15 years in counselling ministry, I have also listened and counselled many people who have had real life first hand ‘experiences’ with the spiritual realm. More importantly, I know the spiritual dimension is real also because the Bible talks about it.WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT THIS SPIRITUAL DIMENSION?

From the above verses – we can conclude that not only there is a spiritual dimension but also that we are at war! Well, you would say, where is the heavy artillery – weapons, armoured cars, the army? The answer is simple – we are at war with an UNSEEN world. We are fighting a spiritual war! Time and time again, we are getting tripped up because we are fighting a spiritual war with our natural weapons: our intellect, our own strength etc.

Our eyes are blind to the spiritual realm whereas the devil has ‘night vision goggles’ and sees everything. He sees every bullet or dart that hits us. And if we have our armour on, he sees every chink in that armour. He knows when you are hit because he sees our reaction, he sees us limping in pain when we are hit, and he sees all the darts and the bullets.
In short, the devil can see us – we cannot see him. We are just sitting ducks! We do not even realize when we are being shot at! Therefore, it is important that we learn to fight SMART because the devil is a master strategist! Gen 3:1 (NKJV) Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.

2 Cor 10:3-5 (NKJV) For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.
In the natural – the battlefield is in the mind. This passage shows us spiritual warfare starts in our minds. So how do we know that we are being attacked? Where do we first experience it? Sometimes it is physical, but most of the time, it starts in the mind. We know we are being attacked when we get hit with a negative thought or a critical thought or a painful memory. The good news is that even though there are demonic spirits that attack us from an unseen world, Jesus has given us the power and authority to defeat them. HALLELUJAH! Jesus has conquered hell and death on the cross. If we can have victory over our thoughts, then we are well on our way to complete the victory and complete control over our lives in Him. If our minds remain strong and steadfast in God – nothing can touch us!HOW DO WE WIN THE BATTLE OF THE MIND?

2 Cor 10:3-5 (NKJV) For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

  • We need to understand that the strongholds in the mind exists!

In order to win the battle of the mind, we need to understand that the strongholds of the mind exist. What is this STRONGHOLD of the mind? Stronghold is a military term that describes a fortified place or a place of domination or control (see picture). Therefore, a STRONGHOLD of the mind is an entrenched or fixed way of thinking.

All of us have developed habits and a way of thinking while we were growing up – some good, some bad and some that blatantly contradict the Word of God. Therefore, over time, we can develop the STRONGHOLDS of worry, fear, bitterness, anger including strongholds of sin, greed, selfishness or laziness. This is especially true if these strongholds are mental habits that have been burned into our minds through TRAUMA or ABUSE.
Our thinking can become even more entrenched where there is constant ‘programming’ day in and day out from the enemy that says: “You are not good enough!” “You can’t do it” “Nobody likes you” “Nobody cares…” “I might as well give up!”The Bible says everything that is not of FAITH is sin (Rom 14:23). When we continue to practice fear, anger, lust and negativity about ourselves, the devil says “Ah ha! I got you!” These negative STRONGHOLDS give the devil a foothold in our lives. When the people of Israel arrived at the foot of the land of Canaan, the land of milk and honey, the land that God has promised them, they saw Giants on the land (the descendents of Anak). There, the Lord did not hand over the land to the Israelites on a platter – they had to fight for it. The Bible says – we inherit the promises of God by faith. Amen! (Heb 6:12b – NKJV)

  • We can PULL DOWN the strongholds when we cast down / capture these thoughts and bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

Here are some key definitions:

To cast down: to knock down, to destroy. It means to take down something down and remove it from a position of influence.
Bringing every thought into captivity: to capture our thoughts and do not let them wander. It means to take control of our thoughts and take it captive like a prisoner. You are saying “No! DEVIL, I am not going to listen to you anymore! From now on, this is what I am going believe in and this is what how I am going to live by and how I am going to ACT!”
This is not going to be an INSTANTANEOUS change! It takes DISCLIPLINE and it takes DILIGENCE. But it can be done!
You need TO THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT! We need to rethink what we believe and what we assume to be true. Rethink what is right and what we assume is the right way to handle life. Rethink the principles and concepts that we adopted and developed when we were growing up. If we do not rethink some of these concepts, we might be living and making decisions based on thinking that are wrong and not Christ centered. Rethink what you think!
2 Tim 1:7 (NKJV) For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.We can have a sound, disciplined, strong mind, and we can think the thoughts of God, reason according to the Word of God and reject the thoughts of the world. Church at the end of the day – it is what we meditate on. If we fill our minds with worldly things such as lust, corrupt images and evil things, then that is what we become.
Prov 23:7 (NKJV) For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.The movies today are full of sexual images and evil overtones. Adultery is something that is tolerated, and even expected, in our society. Horror movies that are full of fear, hate and murder are box-office hits.We are fighting for our FREEDOM against a cunning, INTELLIGENT, CALCULATED ENEMY! Friends – it takes 40 CONTINUOUS days to break a habit and a mindset! But you got to do it every day! Because the devil is FIGHTING against you! Your old SINFUL nature is fighting against you! NOT ONLY IS YOUR OLD MAN ‘PROGRAMMED’ TO AN OLD WAY OF THINKING – THE DEVIL REINFORCES IT EVERYDAY!

  • The weapons of our warfare are MIGHTY IN GOD for the pulling down of strongholds.

2 Cor 10:3-5 (NKJV) 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments (constant voices that lead us to death) and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

God has provided all we need through his son Jesus Christ! Remember, if God is for us, who can be against us! Go forth and conquer!
